Native Brook Trout Population Recovery
New survey data shows encouraging recovery of native brook trout in several West Virginia streams. Habitat restoration efforts are making a measurable difference.
The native brook trout is West Virginia's state fish and a living marker of cold, clean, healthy water. Once abundant across the Appalachian highlands, wild brook trout have declined over the past century. But recent surveys offer real hope: in several streams, their populations are trending upward.
Why Brook Trout Matter
Wild brook trout need water that stays cold, clean and well-oxygenated year-round. When they thrive, it's a sign the whole stream ecosystem is functioning. They are also a prized target for fly anglers, and the most rewarding fish for many West Virginia sportsmen to catch.

The Threats
Historical logging, land-use changes, acid deposition, rising water temperatures and competition or hybridization from non-native trout all took a toll. In many mountain watersheds, brook trout were pushed into only the coldest headwater streams.
What the Surveys Show
Monitoring efforts across the mountains have documented brook trout in streams where they were once scarce, and stable or improving numbers in others. While the recovery is not uniform everywhere, the trend in restored watersheds is encouraging.
Key drivers of the improvement include:
- Riparian reforestation that shades and cools streams.
- Acid mitigation and water-quality improvements in sensitive watersheds.
- Habitat restoration, including large woody debris and bank stabilization.
- Removal or isolation of non-native fish from key brook trout waters.
How Anglers Can Help
Wild brook trout populations are fragile, so anglers play an important role:
- Practice catch-and-release, especially in small headwater streams.
- Keep fish wet and handle them minimally.
- Never move fish or water between streams.
- Respect special regulations on brook trout waters.
